The Age of Wonder Never Ended: Help Choose the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World
Wonder is not a relic of the distant past. It is a living, breathing force, shaped by the hands of every generation that dares to dream, build, and connect. Today, for the first time in history, the global community is being invited to define the landmarks that have shaped our modern age.
The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has officially launched a monumental, year-long campaign to identify the 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World. This is not merely a search for breathtaking architecture; it is a celebration of human ingenuity and the transformative power of travel.
Beyond Stone and Steel
When we think of “wonders,” our minds often drift to ancient pyramids or historic amphitheaters. However, the WTTC’s initiative invites us to look at the world differently. The campaign focuses on man-made structures, landmarks, and buildings created since 1801—sites that have done more than just grace a postcard.
These “contemporary wonders” are the engines of the 21st century. They are the structures that:
- Redefine Destinations: Think of the “Bilbao Effect,” where the Guggenheim Museum transformed an entire city’s international reputation.
- Ignite Economies: They serve as strategic infrastructure, attracting vital investment, creating jobs, and supporting local businesses.
- Strengthen Communities: They stand as symbols of local pride and cultural identity, enriching the lives of those who live nearby.
From the iron lattice of the Eiffel Tower to the cultural ambition of the Grand Egyptian Museum, these sites demonstrate how bold vision can turn a structure into a global beacon of growth and resilience.
Your Voice Matters: The Journey to 2027
For the first time, the selection of these global icons is in your hands. Whether it is a world-renowned masterpiece or an emerging landmark that has changed the fabric of a local community, your nomination has the power to shine a light on the places that define our modern experience.
The campaign will unfold over four key milestones:
- 7 July 2026: Global nominations are now officially open.
- 7 January 2027: The 70 nominees are revealed, and public voting commences.
- 7 April 2027: The field narrows to the 30 finalists.
- 7 July 2027: The final 7 Contemporary Wonders of the World are unveiled to the globe.
Why This Matters
As Gloria Guevara, President & CEO of the WTTC, poignantly noted, “Every generation leaves its mark on the world”. By participating in this campaign, we are not just voting for buildings; we are acknowledging the visionary investments that shape how we travel, connect, and thrive today.
This is your opportunity to participate in a piece of history. Whether you are nominating a skyline-defining skyscraper or a cultural hub that rejuvenated a neighborhood, your choice helps tell the story of the modern world.
