Driving Global Tourism: Why Hon. Edmund Bartlett Was Named to the 2026 MIPAD Top 100

A Visionary Honored: Hon. Edmund Bartlett Named to MIPAD Global Top 100

In a testament to his transformative impact on the global travel landscape, Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, has been named to the prestigious Most Influential People of African Descent (MIPAD) Global Top 100 list for the Travel, Tourism & Hospitality Edition—Class of 2026.

The announcement, made on Global Africa Day in partnership with The Pyne Awards Africa, celebrates 100 leaders of African descent who are actively shaping the future of aviation, destination marketing, cultural storytelling, and hospitality.

A Legacy of Global Leadership

Minister Bartlett’s inclusion on this list is the latest in a series of international accolades that highlight his decades of advocacy for resilience, sustainability, and innovation. Earlier this year, he was named “Tourism Minister of the Year – Worldwide” by the Pacific Area Travel Writers Association (PATWA) and received the Global Tourism Resilience Lifetime Achievement Award in Nairobi.

Reflecting on the honor, Minister Bartlett remained characteristically humble, attributing the success to his homeland.

“This recognition is not just for me, but for Jamaica and for the people whose warmth, culture, and resilience make our island the heart of global tourism,” said Minister Bartlett. “Tourism must continue to be a vehicle for empowerment, for telling our stories, and for connecting the African Diaspora to opportunity”.

Championing the “Tourism Economy”

Under Minister Bartlett’s stewardship, Jamaica has moved beyond traditional metrics of visitor arrivals. He has championed the concept of a “Tourism Economy,” which integrates agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and technology to ensure that tourism wealth is retained locally.

His strategic initiatives in 2026 include:

  • Economic Integration: Leading efforts to bridge the gap between tourism demand and local supply chains across the Caribbean.
  • Infrastructure Transformation: Advancing plans for a new National Tourism Authority to streamline regulation and boost investment.
  • Resilience Advocacy: Building global frameworks—through the Global Tourism Resilience and Crisis Management Centre—that help destinations recover from environmental and economic shocks.

Celebrating the Path Forward

The Class of 2026 honorees will be celebrated during a series of global events, including the MIPAD Lagos Diaspora Week and official ceremonies in New York, spanning from October 2026 through January 2027.

As the world continues to navigate a shifting economic landscape, Minister Bartlett’s vision serves as a beacon for how small island nations can exert global influence through innovation, strategic partnership, and an unwavering commitment to inclusive growth.
